A halfback, Andrew debuted for the Newcastle Knights in 1993 as an interchange player. In 1994, Andrew scored 23 points in his run-on debut. Andrew was a member of Newcastle’s 1997 premiership. In 2001, Andrew was appointed the captain of Newcastle 2001 and led Newcastle to the premiership. Andrew retired in April 2007. Andrew played 250 games for Newcastle over 15 seasons (82 tries, 920 goals, 22 field goals). Andrew played 3 games for Warrington in 2005 (1 try, 12 goals, and 1 field goal).
Andrew played 3 games for Country Origin from 1995-96 and 2003 (1 try, 7 goals). Andrew played 23 games for New South Wales from 1996-05 (4 tries, 37 goals, 4 field goals). Andrew captained New South Wales from 2002-03. Andrew played 24 test matches for Australia from 1995-06 (7 tries, 78 goals). Andrew captained Australia on two occasions.
Andrew is a commentator for Channel 9 and co-host of the Sunday Footy Show. From 2012-16 Andrew was a member of Triple M’s Monday night commentary team.
Andrew has worked as a halves/kicking coach for several NRL clubs and some Rugby Union teams.
Andrew was awarded the Dally M Medal in 1998, 1999 and 2002. Andrew was awarded the Golden Boot in 1999 and 2001. In 2001, Andrew was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal and was the leading point scorer in the NRL. From 2006-09 Andrew was the top point scorer in the NRL. In 2008, Andrew was selected as the halfback in the Australian, New South Wales, Country and Newcastle Teams of the Century. Also, in 2008, Andrew was named one of Australia’s 100 Greatest Players. In 2011, Andrew was inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions. In 2012, Andrew was inducted as an Immortal. Also, in 2012, Andrew was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. In 2017, Andrew was inducted into the NSWRL Hall of Fame. In 2018, Andrew was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame.
