Joe joined the Eastern Suburbs Roosters in 1929. Joe was a member of Eastern Suburbs in the 1931 and 1934 Grand Final sides. Joe was a member of Eastern Suburbs 1935-37 and 1940 premiership-winning sides as well as Eastern Suburbs Grand Final sides in 1938 and 41. Joe played 147 games for Eastern Suburbs over 14 seasons (34 tries, 14 goals).

Joe played 11 games for City Firsts from 1930-41 (4 tries, 5 goals). Joe played 3 games for Metropolis from 1930-38. Joe played 1 game for Sydney in1 936. Joe played 32 matches for New South Wales from 1930-41 (6 tries, 10 goals). Joe played 13 test matches for Australia from 1932-37 (1 try, 1 goal).

Joe coached Eastern Suburbs in 1944 for 14 games (4 wins).

Joe passed away on October 16 1995.

In 2000, Joe was selected in the second-row in the Eastern Suburbs Team of the Century. In 2007, Joe was inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame. In 2008, Joe was selected as one of Australia’s 100 Greatest Players. In 2018, Joe was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame.
