Wayne joined the Balmain Tigers in 1980. In 1982, Wayne was appointed captain of Balmain and led Balmain to the 1988 and 1989 Grand Finals. Wayne played 214 games for Balmain over 11 seasons (35 tries).
Wayne played 4 games for City Firsts from 1983-86. Wayne played 2 games for City Origin from 1987-88 (1 try). Wayne played 15 games for New South Wales from 1983-88 (3 tries). Wayne played 19 test matches for Australia from 1982-88 (6 tries).
In 1994, Wayne was appointed coach of the Balmain Tigers. Wayne coached Balmain for 158 games over 6 seasons (55 wins, 1 draw). In 2000, Wayne was appointed the inaugural coach of the Wests Tigers. Wayne coached Wests for 26 games (11 wins, 2 draws). From 1999-2001 Wayne coached New South Wales for 9 games (5 wins, 1 draw).
In 1985, Wayne was awarded the Rothmans Medal. In 1988, Wayne was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia OAM). In 2008, Wayne was selected at lock in the Balmain Team of the Century. In 2008, Wayne was chosen as one of Australia’s 100 Greatest Players. Since 2012, Wayne has been a commissioner on the ARL Commission. In 2018, Wayne was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame.
