Jock began his career with Brunner before joining Sydenham in 1953. Jock played four seasons for Sydenham. In 1958, Jock returned to Brunner for a further 6 seasons. In 1964, Jock joined the Manly Sea Eagles. Jock played 10 games over one season for Manly. In 1965, Jock became captain-coach of Leeton. In 1966, Jock joined Mt. Isa, where he played for three seasons. In 1970, Jock joined Cloncurry for three seasons.

Jock played for Canterbury from 1953-57. Jock played for West Coast from 1958-63. Jock played 36 test matches for New Zealand from 1954-63 (7 tries).

Jock passed away on February 14 2004.

In 2001, Jock was inducted as a New Zealand Legend of League. In 2007, Jock was selected as the hooker in the New Zealand Team of the Century.
