Mark began his career with the Otahuhu Leopards in 1975. Mark was a member of Otahuhu’s back-to-back Fox Memorial Shield premierships in 1977-78. Mark played for Otahuhu for 5 seasons. In 1980, Mark joined the North Brisbane Devils. Mark was a member of North Brisbane’s 1980 premiership-winning team. Mark played 19 games (9 tires) for North Brisbane over 1 season. In 1981, Mark joined the North Sydney Bears as captain of the side. Mark played 154 games for North Sydney over 8 seasons (31 tries, 1 goal). In 1988, Mark joined Wakefield Trinity for 1 season.
Mark played 12 games for Auckland from 1975-77 and 1978. Mark played 28 test matches for New Zealand from 1977-88. Mark captained New Zealand for 18 test matches.
In 1999 Mark was appointed coach of the Auckland Warriors. Mark coached the Auckland Warriors for 50 games over 2 seasons (18 wins, 2 draws).
In 1995 Mark was an inaugural inductee as a New Zealand Legend of League. In 1996 Mark was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame. In 2007, Mark was selected in the second row in the New Zealand Team of the Century and was named the New Zealand Player of the Century. In 2018, Mark was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame. Mark is an Auckland Rugby League Immortal.
