A halfback, Stacey began his career with the Auckland City Vulcans in 1994. In 1995, Stacey Jones joined the Auckland Warriors. In 2001, Stacey Jones was appointed co-captain of the Warriors. Stacey co-captained the Warriors in 2001 and 2002 before becoming captain for the 2003-04 seasons. Stacey captained the Warriors’ Grand Final side in 2002. Stacey played 245 games for the Warriors over 11 seasons (80 tries, 171 goals, 12 field goals). In 2006, Stacey joined the Catalans Dragons as captain. Stacey led the Catalans to the 2007 Challenge Cup final. Stacey played 45 games for Catalans over 2 seasons (12 tries, 49 goals, and 4 field goals). After sitting out the 2008 season, Stacey re-joined the Warriors for the 2009 season. Stacey played 23 games for the Warriors (2 tries, 5 goals, and 2 field goals).
Stacey played 1 game for Auckland in 1994. Stacey played 48 test matches for New Zealand from 1995-06 (17 tries, 50 goals, 2 field goals). Stacey captained New Zealand from 2002-06.
Stacey coached Point Chevalier Pirates from 2010-12. In 2014 Stacey was appointed the coach of the Warriors National Youth Competition. Stacey coached the side to the 2014 premiership. In 2015, Stacey was appointed coach of the Warriors NSW Cup side. Stacey coached the NSW Cup side for 2 seasons. Since 2017, Stacey has been an assistant coach to the Warriors’ NRL team. In 2019, Stacey was appointed coach of New Zealand Māori. In 2022, Stacey was appointed the Warriors’ interim coach.
In 2003, Stacey Jones was inducted as an Auckland Rugby League Immortal. In 2005, Stace was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merrit (ONZM). In 2006, Stacey was selected as the halfback in the New Zealand Rugby League Team of the Century. In 2014, Stacey was inducted into the Māori Sports Hall of Fame. In 2019, Stacey was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame. In 2022, Stacey was inducted as a New Zealand Legend of League.
