Roy began his career with Otahuhu. Roy was a member of Otahuhu’s 1964, 1967, 1970-71 and 1971 Grand Finals (Premierships in 1964, 1970-71).
Roy played for Auckland. Roy played 32 test matches for New Zealand from 1965-1972 (5 tries). Roy captained New Zealand from 1970-1972.
After retirement, Roy served as Otahuhu’s chairman.
Since 1984, Roy has been a minister in the Presbyterian church.
In 1972, Roy was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire. In 2007, Roy was inducted as a New Zealand Legend of League.
Roy passed away on November 20 2024.
