Originally a Rugby Union player, Travers joined the Ponsonby Panthers in 1944. Travers played six seasons for Ponsonby. In 1950, Travers joined the Ngruwahia Panthers.
Travers played for Auckland from 1944-49. Travers played for Waikato from 1950-52. Travers played 14 test matches for New Zealand from 1946-52 (4 tries). In 1953 Travers joined the American All-Stars due to an injury crisis.
Travers coached the New Zealand Maori in 1956. Travers coached New Zealand for 8 test matches from 1959-60 (4 wins).
Travers served as a selector for New Zealand from 1971-75. Travers served as a selector for Auckland in 1973.
Travers passed away on 25 April 1979.
In 2000, Travers was inducted as a New Zealand Legend of League.
